It’s that time of the year when the evenings get lighter, the sun starts to shine, and fashion starts to heat up for the spring and summer. All the major plus size fashion brands are starting to stock their stores with the season’s newest looks, but with so much to choose from, summer shopping can feel a bit overwhelming. Read our handy guide to discover which plus size trends to follow for SS13.
1. Sports Luxe
At London Fashion Week, front row bloggers like Suzie Bubble were rarely seen without their trainers, spawning hundreds of high street copies. To get the look for yourself, pick a wedged pair of Hi-tops in a soft grey or neon brights, paired with a pair of soft silky trousers with a running stripe up the side. Satin bomber jackets are sticking around for another season, and jewel coloured versions will look great with a casual grey marl tee.
2. California Girl
Coachella wrapped up last weekend, and the fashion magazines have been eager to take inspiration from the music festival’s style. The ‘Hippy chick’ look was worn by everyone from Vanessa Hudgens to Diane Kruger, who were seen in flowing maxi dresses worn with cut off denim jackets. Style in View has a great selection of size 18 dresses, going up to a 28. Keep footwear relaxed with fringed leather sandals or a pair of tan wedges, and add a stack of wooden bangles, some turquoise enamel earrings and some beachy California girl waves.
3. Oriental
This trend sees a dramatic move away from last summer’s focus on pastels and Cath Kidston-esque florals, with big and bold red rose prints set across a black background. Silk kimono dresses offer a flattering silhouette, with mid length sleeves and deep v necklines. Many brands are also offering kimono jackets, with soft hems and a silk empire line belt.
4. The swinging 60’s
Block colours and graphic prints will be everywhere in plus size fashion this summer. Monochrome dresses in wearable stripes keep the look fresh and contemporary. Be sure to invest in a boxy patent handbag; if you want something really fashion-forward then pick one in a bright primary colour like red or yellow. See New Look for great value versions.
5. Metallics
Metallics are not just in gold and silver this spring/summer, but in green and purple too. You could wear the look by slinging a metallic leather jacket over a jewel coloured cocktail dress, or by investing in a pair of low heeled shoes. The shoe of the season is most often seen on the queen- a blocky mid heeled court shoe- but can be quickly updated by infusing some metallics, even if it’s just on the detailing.
If you love plus size fashion, then there is so much to choose from for spring/summer 2013. Whether you pick a pair of fun pink Hi-tops, or a sophisticated silk kimono jacket, you’re sure to find a look that will turn heads.
